Tuwaiq Palace

Tuwaiq Palace is a significant cultural building situated on a plateau on the northwest side of Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter designed by Atelier Frei Otto in collaboration with Buro Huppold and Omrania in 1981. The building is enclosed by inclined curved walls and hosts various reception areas, multi-purpose halls, and accommodation facilities. The spaces fall within a curvilinear spine that wraps around various gardens and landscapes designed by Richard Bödeker. The circular tensile structures span out of the curved limestone mass in three areas and are enclosed by glass walls that help extend the halls’s view to the surrounding wadi. The project was completed in 1985, and was the recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1998.
