Miqat Dhul Hulaifa Mosque
The mosque was built during the reign of Abdullah bin Omar in 83 AH (706–712 CE), and was renovated several times afterwards. The most recent major renovation was during the reign of King Fahd. In 1989 the Ministry of Hajj Affairs and Awqaf commissioned the Egyptian architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, known for developing contemporary mosque designs inspired by Arabian vernacular architecture. The current mosque is built in the shape of a square over 6,000 sqm, outlined with a continuous square-shaped enclosure totaling 36,000 sqm. At the heart of the mosque is a wide courtyard of approximately 1,000 sqm embracing a water spring shaded by an iconic dome. One hundred domes cover the corridors at 16 meters height, while the iconic spiral minaret reaches 64 meters.
